Where our footprints come from.
The footprint library in 3V3 is built from other people’s work. Every source is listed here, with its licence, whom to credit, and the exact version we loaded.
In short
- Using a footprint in your board does not make your board open. No library below asks you to publish your board. KiCad, Digi-Key and Espressif say so in an exception for designs: the boards, Gerber files and other files you make with them are yours, under any licence you like. The others (MIT, Apache, CC BY, CERN-OHL-P) have no share-alike clause at all.
- Würth Elektronik’s footprints are not under an open licence. They stay Würth’s property and Würth’s own terms (linked in its block below) apply to anyone who takes them from here; every one is marked as a converted copy and credits Würth as the source.
- Copying the footprint library itself is different. If you take the footprints, or part of them, out of 3v3.dev and share them on as a collection, they stay under the licence they came with: the same licence, the credit, and the licence documents. For the CC BY-SA libraries that means the same licence; for the others, keeping their notice and the credit below. 3v3.dev keeps these footprints apart from its own built-in parts, labelled with their source, licence and credit on every one, and does not relicense them: the CC BY-SA libraries are, as a collection, still CC BY-SA 4.0 with their exception for designs.
- This page covers the footprints we took from other libraries. The software and the site of 3v3.dev are not part of any of them and are not offered under their licences.

- 15,464 footprints in 155 libraries, 390,859 pads. 15,461 are in the store; 3 are left out because they have no pads and nothing 3V3 can read yet to draw (logos and symbols drawn on copper layers).
- Licence

- The KiCad library contributors (the KiCad EDA project).
- What we changed
- Each footprint was converted from KiCad’s
.kicad_modtext into 3V3’s own footprint format, with every dimension kept to a nanometre. Where 3V3 cannot draw something yet it is left out or approximated, and the footprint says so when you place it: lettering on the silkscreen is left out, a pad with a custom shape becomes the rectangle that just covers it, and a slotted hole becomes a round one the narrow way. Each footprint keeps its KiCad name, asLibrary:Name(for exampleResistor_SMD:R_0805_2012Metric).
The exception to the licence, word for word from the library’s own LICENSE.md:
“To the extent that the creation of electronic designs that use 'Licensed Material' can be considered to be 'Adapted Material', then the copyright holder waives article 3 of the license with respect to these designs and any generated files which use data provided as part of the 'Licensed Material'.”

- How much
- 7,565 footprints in 43 libraries, 73,796 pads.
- Licence
- Würth Elektronik eiSos “License Terms” for its KiCad library (the vendor's own terms, not an open-source licence). The licence text that came with the library: License_Terms_WE_KiCad_library.pdf at that commit. Also with it: Disclaimer_WE_KiCad_library.pdf.
- Credit
- Würth Elektronik eiSos GmbH & Co. KG. Footprints only: the repository's 3D models and symbols are not loaded. Questions about the library itself go to Würth: libraries@we-online.com.
- What we changed
- Each footprint was converted from KiCad's .kicad_mod text into 3V3's own footprint format. We changed no dimension and moved or renamed nothing, but 3V3 cannot draw everything yet (lettering on the silkscreen is left out, a pad with a custom shape becomes the rectangle that just covers it, a slotted hole becomes a round one the narrow way), so a footprint is a converted copy and not Würth's original file, and every one is marked that way: originally provided by Würth Elektronik eiSos, converted by 3v3.dev. Each keeps its Würth name, as Library:Name (for example Inductor_SMD_Wurth:...). Würth's disclaimer travels with the data.
Their terms are not an open-source licence. The parts that matter here, word for word from License_Terms_WE_KiCad_library.pdf:
“WE eiSos hereby grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non- sublicensable, royalty-free license to use the Models under the conditions set forth in these license terms.”
“You shall be allowed to create designs with the Models and share those designs. You shall be allowed to modify the Models. You shall be allowed to share the modified Models.”
“You must attribute WE eiSos as the provider of the original Model. You must clearly mark all modified Models in such a way that it is immediately clear to any third party that it is a modified Model, which was originally provided by WE eiSos in its original form.”
“The Models created and provided by WE eiSos are and will remain the exclusive property of WE eiSos.”
Our reading, which is not legal advice: you may use these footprints in your designs and share those designs; a copy that has been changed has to say so and name Würth as the source, so every Würth footprint here is marked as a converted copy of Würth’s original; and the footprints stay Würth’s, so we do not relicense them.
